Cart Before the Horse?
Over the last few weeks I have been able to spend a good deal of hands-on time with Blu-ray 3D movies from the comfort of my couch at home using NVIDIA's PC-centric ecosystem, which consists of a PC, playback software, display, and 3D Vision glasses. The good news is that it works beautifully: the movies looked great and performed without a hitch in 3D, viewed via a 3D-capable projector on a six-foot screen.
The bad news, or rather the most potentially disturbing news if I'm a consumer thinking about shelling out some significant dollars for Blu-ray 3D , is that the movies are pretty much non-existant and the short-term outlook doesn't look all that promising. I can't help but think all the current TV-based hardware that vendors are scrambling to bring to retail is a case of putting "the cart before the horse", and the exclusivity deals we're seeing may hurt, or slow, Blu-ray 3D adoption in the short-term.
Sure, I've been able to watch Blu-ray 3D movies in my living room, but these have been limited to just two: Monsters vs. Aliens, and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. MvA is only available bundled with certain Samsung hardware (I was fortunate to be able to borrow a copy from an early adopter neighbor) and Cloudy remains the only Blu-ray 3D title you can buy at retail on its lonesome. Monster House is due September 14th, and then A Christmas Carol in November. Other than those...there's not much in the offing as vendors continue to fight to differentiate their hardware by locking up exclusivity bundles with hot 3D movies.
This is driving prices through the roof on the open market (check out current prices for Coraline on Blu-ray 3D on eBay). There's only so many times you can watch a given movie, and both MvA and Cloudy have worn out their welcome at my household, which includes two eight-year-old girls. The great thing about NVIDIA's 3D PC ecosystem is, of course, that you can use it for so many other things, such as 3D games, which does help lesson the pain as we wait for more titles to creep onto shelves.
We've got a full report on Blu-ray 3D and everything you need to enjoy it in the upcoming Fall issue of NVISION, which is due out the first week of September. Check it out and let us know what you think! In the meantime I'm going to see how big I can project Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on the side of my garage, and do some 3D gaming...
